St Bede's College Chapel
The design for the new chapel at St Bede’s College responds to the physical context of the campus by building on the existing architectural character. Elements have been referenced from surrounding buildings such as the shallow roof pitch, vertical window proportions, solid parapets to the gables, and the use of brick. Stained glass windows salvaged from the old chapel which stood nearby have been reused along with other heritage items.
The interior has been designed to enhance the acoustics of the choral and instrumental music associated with the celebration of mass and the height of the interior permits a gallery above the narthex. The shape of the plan also allows the congregation to be up close to the sanctuary, in a more communal arrangement.
The new chapel will also be used as the teaching space for religious education at St Bede’s.
